iTrain Presents at the UKOUG Northern Server Technology Day

April 2009

Block corruption, hardware failure, total database loss, we would all like to think we have it covered, but our biggest cause of media failure is user error or to coin another phrase I like to use, user induced trauma. Now it might be a table that has had wrong values applied, maybe truncated or even dropped, the main objectives here are to get it back as it was and with the least amount of outage/downtime. It's not always a straight forward task as I'm sure you will agree.

The Flashback functionality existed in 9i when it was initially introduced, called Flashback Query, you had to program PL/SQL blocks to look at before data. It has been somewhat simplified in 10g, incorporated in SQL and makes use of the technology that has been around for years, UNDO segments, previously called rollback.

The problem in the past was that committed transaction information could potentially be over written. The way the database now deals with the issue, to avoid potentially overwriting information, is to ensure new transactions first look for unused space before overwriting previously used segments. There is also a parameter that enables you to hold onto the information for a longer period of time. This extension of the information holding period also secures the UNDO or BEFORE image from being overwritten.

What this means is we can use this UNDO to aid us in undoing committed transaction that have caused the errors we hope to put right quickly. This is known as the flashback window, we can use the view V$UNDOSTAT to establish what settings to implement for the UNDO.

Simon's full presentation takes you through the fundamental processes and procedures to set-up your own systems for use with Flashback database. If you were unable to attend Simon's Flashback presentation at the Northern Server Technology Day, expect to see him present at this year's UKOUG Conference Series Technology & E-Business Suite 2009 in Birmingham.
